CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS OF RETINOBLASTOMA IN A HOSPITAL OF TERESINA, PIAUI

Introdução / Purpose

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in children, with more than 7.000 new cases per year worldwide. To describe clinical, demographic and pathological findings in patients with retinoblastoma enucleated eyes.

Material e Método / Methods

An observational study, with retrospective data collection, based on the analysis of patient charts with enucleated eyes by retinoblastoma at Getúlio Vargas Hospital from 2008 to 2018.

Resultados / Results

Of the 41 patients, 58% were male, 39% of the tumors were bilateral. Leucocoria was the most important initial signal (78.1%). There were 2 patients (4.9%) with a family history. All patients were classified in stages D or E based on the International Classification of Retinoblastoma and submitted to chemoradduction prior to enucleation. The mean age of diagnosis was 27.07 months, with an average delay of 6.43 months in relation to the initial symptom. All 6 patients (14.6%) who had metastases died. A statistically significant association was found between choroidal involvement and cases of metastasis (p = 0.017). There was no association between degree of differentiation, involvement of the post-laminar optic nerve, involvement of the surgical margin, sclera and anterior segment with cases of metastasis.

Discussão e Conclusões / Conclusion

Clinical and demographic data were similar to those in the literature. In the analysis of histopathological data, the presence of choroidal involvement was significantly associated with cases of metastasis.
