Título

PROLIFERATIVE SICKLE RETINOPATHY IN A PATIENT WITH SICKLE CELL TRAIT: CASE REPORT

Introdução / Purpose

The objective of this study is to present a case of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy in a patient with sickle cell trait and to show the importance of a correct and early diagnosis and follow - up of patients in daily practice.

Material e Método / Methods

Presentation of a clinical case.

Resultados / Results

A 37-year-old male patient, with a history of low visual acuity in the left eye, suddenly seven days ago, worsening for one day. The diagnosis of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy was established through hemoglobin electrophoresis, clinical findings and angiofluoresceinography. Patient was submitted to pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil and endofotocoagulation in left eye (LE). After four months of the surgical procedure the patient presented visual acuity in LE with its best correction of 20/150 and indirect ophthalmoscopy applied retina, glass chamber with silicone oil, photocoagulation brands, venous engorgement, silver wire vessels and pathological arteriovenous junction.

Discussão e Conclusões / Discussion

Despite the patients with sickle cell trait a false problem with systemic problems, a chance of development of ocular problems and eight times greater. However, proliferative sickle retinopathy (PSR) is an uncommon complication in sickle cell behavior. As the countries of the Americas (among them, Brazil) are known to a great extent of sickle cell trait patients and with a significant incidence of sickle cell disease, structures or health systems are developed for improvement or follow-up, improve the quality of life and increase longevity of patients.
