Abstract General Information

Título / Title

EVALUATION AND COMPARISON OF MACULAR AND CHOROIDAL THICKNESS AFTER INTRACAMERAL MOXIFLOXACIN FOR PREVENTION OF POSTCATARACT ENDOPHTHALMITIS

Introdução / Purpose

To evaluate if the using of intracameral moxifloxacin cause changes in macular and choroidal thickness

Material e Método / Methods

A randomized clinical trial was conducted at UNICAMP. The patients that were going to be submitted to phacoemulsification surgery were divided into 2 groups. The Group A received 0,03ml intracameral moxifloxacin during surgery, while Group B didn't receive any antibiotics intracamerally. Both groups applied eyedrops as usual in the postoperative. The investigators were blind. Patients were examined using Spectral Domain-OCT (SPECTRALIS®OCT), in the pre-operative, at the 30th and at the 60th postoperative. Data was collected regarding central macular thickness (CMT) and choroidal thickness using Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI). Exclusion criteria: diabetes, macular changes pre-operative, and any complication during the phaco

Resultados / Results

A total of 93 patients were assigned to this study: 49 in A and 45 in B. The mean age was 68.9± 10.49 (36-88 years) for A; while for B was 68.88± 11.15(40-92 years). There was no statistical difference(p=0.988).
For the baseline parameters: there was no statistical difference for CMT (p=0.827) and choroid thickness (p=0.549); for A, mean CMT was 267.6± 27.48 μm and in B it was 266.5± 21.62 μm. The values for EDI was 208.2± 40.13 μm for A and 202.1± 56.31 μm for B.
Follow up: there was no statistical difference for neither of the parameters; either on the 30th day or the 60th days.
On the 30th postoperative CMT varied from 8.69± 14.67 μm for A and 10.26± 22.44 μm for B (p=0.690); EDI varied 1.71± 16.06 μm for A and 3.74± 16.15 for B (p=0.548).
On the 60th day: CMT varied from 19.11± 38.77 μm for A and 17.14± 53.68 μm for B (p=0.847); EDI varied 5.20± 21.55 μm for A and 5.24± 15.80 for B (p=0.993)
