BINOCULAR INDIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPY IN THE STATE OF BAHIA IN THE LAST 10 YEARS
Introdução / Purpose
To draw a panorama of the last 10 years on the statistics related to the binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO) examination performed in the single health system (SUS) in the state of Bahia, comparing with the data from the Northeast region of Brazil.
Material e Método / Methods
Quantitative, descriptive, observational and cross-sectional population study, based on information provided by the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH), from 2008 to 2018.
Resultados / Results
During the study period, there were 2,456,746 BIO examinations in the state of Bahia, corresponding to 25.74% of all BIO in the Northeast region between 2008 and 2018. 2010 was the year in which most BIO examination was performed in Bahia (507,247), compared to 2008, when fewer exams were performed (146,471), as can be seen in Chart 1. In relation to the Northeast region of Brazil, the year with the most BIO (1,124,617) was 2017, and the year with the lowest amount (537,684) was 2013. In relation to the expenses with this procedure, the total value in the last 10 years in Bahia was R $ 59,619,975.78, the amount spent was R $ 24.24 per exam.
Discussão e Conclusões / Conclusion
The BIO examination is a fundamental method for the evaluation of the posterior segment of the eye, being important in the diagnosis and follow-up of retinal diseases, such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, among others.¹ In this study, there was no trend of variation or increase in the number of BIO examinations in the SUS in the State of Bahia and in the Northeast, as well as in relation to the expenses of the SUS with this exam, and the value of R $ 24.24 per exam maintained in the last 10 years.
