PATIENT WITH METALLIC INTRAOCULAR FOREIGN BODY WITH 20/25 VISUAL ACUITY: CASE REPORT

Introdução / Purpose

Ocular trauma is an important cause of ocular morbity. It is especially serious when associated to intra-ocular foreign bodies (IOFB) because the variety of co-existing complicated injuries.

Material e Método / Methods

To report a case of ocular trauma with the presence of an intra retinal spike in the Penido Burnier Institute Hospital.

Resultados / Results

A 26-year-old patient with central vision loss, but maintaining visual acuity of 20/25, and reddish vision in the left eye. The anterior biomicroscopy was normal and the fundoscopy showed an intraocular foreign body (IOFB) in the inferior region of the papilla. The patient underwent a vitrectomy that removed a 0.7 cm metal foreign body trapped inside the retina. The silicone oil was placed through the presence of only papillary and peripheral micro ruptures. It presented a self-sealant lesion of the cornea, not losing the intraocular content and keeping the crystalline transparent. The patient maintains the eye preserved and without signs of infection, with visual acuity of 20/60.

Discussão e Conclusões / Conclusion

Ocular trauma with IOFB occurs mostly in young males and workers in high-risk occupations such as machine operators, mechanics and farmers. Most IOFB s are metallic and are located in the posterior ocular segment. Due to the seriousness of such traumas, the implementation of educational measures aimed primarily at accident prevention is essential.
